MUSICAL DIRECTOR - CAYMAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA

Applications are invited for the position of musical director of the Cayman National Orchestra (CNO). Since 2017, under the baton of Jonathan Taylor, CNO has expanded its membership, added a strong percussion section, brought in talented young players and excited concert audiences with the quality of the music. The symphony Orchestra can now claim to be a leader in its field in the Caribbean. The new musical director will be expected to continue this growth and consolidate the Orchestra’s importance as a cornerstone of the developing music and cultural scene in the Cayman Islands.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they are organized leaders with experience in commanding small, and large ensembles. Responsibilities will include, managing a minimum of three annual concerts, awareness of suitable Orchestra repertoires, selection and sourcing of attainable yet challenging music, conducting weekly rehearsals, working with the Cayman National Choir in joint performances and collaborating with other organisations. The musical director will report to the Executive Committee of the Cayman National Choir & Orchestra.

- Be a conductor of proficient technique and command of an ensemble, large or small.
- Be a positive and organised leader to facilitate efficient, enjoyable and encouraging rehearsals.
- Maintain weekly, punctual rehearsals.
- Have and maintain an awareness of orchestral repertoire from a variety of styles, periods and composers, and where to source it.
- Select music which is attainable yet challenging enough for the ensemble, particularly one in a highly transient community.
- Work efficiently with the Choir for joint performances and with third parties when the Orchestra is invited to collaborate with other organisations’ projects, reporting back to EXCO when Resources, Events, PR or Marketing functions are impacted
- Frequently consult with the Orchestra members and audience base for repertoire they would like to play or hear and discuss responses with the EXCO board
- Strive to involve as wide a circle of the community as possible by continuing to lead on recruitment of members, potential soloists and performing works by local composers reporting back to EXCO when Resources, Events, PR or Marketing functions are impacted
- Set and maintain the musical standards for membership
- Report regularly on all activity to the CNCO Board; attend EXCO meetings; propose/deliver programmes supporting the CNCO Strategy Aims and Grant/Sponsor Applications; support the PR, Marketing, Events activity with active communication, programmes, and messaging, including performance discussions, timelines and rehearsal information
